bentonite clay, it can be acid activated. This involves all the cations present in the bentonite (typically Ca2+, Na2+ and Al3+) being replaced by H+ by the addition of either sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. Acid activation changes the clay''s physical and chemical
Acid leaching of heavy metals from bentonite clay Any ferrous iron present in the AMD will, within a short period of time, be auto-oxidized to ferric oxides and hydroxides, releasing H+, effectively forming more acid practical terms, this means that if mining
· The term ''acid-activated clays'' has generally been reserved in the industrial literature for partly dissolved bentonites. Bentonite has always had a multitude of markets, and acid-activated bentonite has been a standard product for many decades. Usually a Ca 2 +-bentonite is treated with inorganic acids to replace divalent calcium cations with monovalent hydrogen ions and to leach out ...

· After the acid activation, the analysis data showed a significant change in the chemical composition in modified bentonite clay, compared to the raw bentonite clay. The acid activation of bentonite caused an increase in the amount of Si +4 and Ti +4 ; this increase could be attributed to the remobilization of cations in the octahedral or tetrahedral sites (Venaruzzo et al. 2002 ).
